Meet Dr. Roger LaVine
I am a licensed psychologist with decades of clinical experience and advanced training in neuropsychology and relationship counseling. I bring over 40 years of marriage, including the unique challenges and rewards of a blended family, to my work with couples. My approach is compassionate, direct, nonjudgmental, and grounded in both evidence-based practice and lived experience.
My Approach
You Are Only Committing to One Session for a Consultation
Before making any commitment to couples counseling, it is essential that both partners have a clear understanding of the shared objectives, what the process will involve, approximately how long it may take, and whether they feel comfortable working with me as their therapist. These important questions are addressed in a single-session consultation.
- In this meeting, we clarify individual and shared goals.
- Both partners have the opportunity to discuss their hopes and concerns.
- We review what the counseling process will look like and set realistic expectations for duration and outcomes.
- You can assess if my approach and style are a good fit for your needs.
Only after this session—and if both partners are comfortable and committed—do we proceed to the track that best fits your needs:
Communication Track
A brief, Gestalt-based pathway (typically 5–8 sessions) focused on helping couples develop collaborative, problem-solving interactions. The goal is to become a team in the face of challenges, not adversaries.
Discernment Counseling Track
A focused, short-term process (2–5 sessions) for couples who are uncertain about staying together. The goal is to help both partners gain clarity and confidence about the next steps—whether to continue as is, commit to couples counseling, or separate. Especially helpful when one partner is “leaning out” and the other is “leaning in.”
Infidelity Track
For couples dealing with betrayal or trust violations. This track addresses emotional injury, insight, and healing—whether the couple chooses to remain together or separate. The Infidelity Track provides longer-term support as needed for deep recovery and rebuilding trust.
Blended Family Track
Support for couples navigating parenting conflicts, stepfamily integration, and developing a healthy, functional family system.
ADHD Track
For couples where one or both partners have ADHD, focusing on understanding its neuropsychological impact, boundary setting, communication strategies, and practical tools.
Individual-in-Relationship Track
For individuals struggling with relationship concerns when their partner is not ready or willing to participate in counseling. This track provides support, skills, and insight to improve dynamics from one side.
Nonjudgmental—just a structured path forward, tailored to your needs.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does neuropsychology help in couples therapy?
Neuropsychology provides a scientific understanding of how temperament, attachment style, and personality influence bonding, conflict, and communication in relationships. By identifying your own and your partner’s emotional wiring—how you process emotions, approach intimacy, and respond to stress—we can break out of negative cycles and develop more effective, compassionate ways of connecting.
What is involved in the neurological assessment?
During the assessment phase, we explore each partner’s temperament, attachment style, personality traits, and relationship history. This helps us understand how each person’s emotional wiring and past experiences shape current patterns and interaction styles.
How many sessions will we need?
Most couples see significant improvement in 4–8 sessions, depending on the complexity of their concerns and their commitment to the process. Some specialized tracks, such as Discernment Counseling, are designed to be brief (2–5 sessions). The Infidelity Track provides longer-term support as needed for deep recovery and rebuilding trust.
Do you have evening appointments?
Yes. Evening appointments are available to accommodate work and family schedules. Please inquire about current availability when you contact the office.
What if my partner does not want to come to therapy?
While couples therapy is most effective when both partners participate, individual sessions can still lead to meaningful change. The Individual-in-Relationship Track provides support and skills for individuals who want to improve their relationship, even if their partner is not ready or willing to attend.
Is this confidential?
Yes. All sessions are private and confidential, in accordance with Florida law and professional ethics.
Do you work with same-sex couples and non-traditional relationships?
Absolutely. All couples and partnerships are welcome and treated with respect.
